The Government Reaffirms Its Commitment To Enhancing Copyright Protection Within The Music Industry

Wednesday, 26 Feb 2025

The Indonesian government continues to demonstrate its commitment to strengthening the protection of copyright for local artists. Through the Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections (Kemenko Kumham Imipas), various strategic measures have been prepared.

Syarifuddin, the Assistant Deputy for Coordination of Utilization, Empowerment, and Protection of Intellectual Property, emphasized the importance of collective awareness. This is crucial for safeguarding copyright within the Indonesian music industry.

"As a nation rich in culture and art, we have a moral and legal obligation to protect and respect the creative works of our local musicians," Syarifuddin stated in an official announcement on Sunday, February 23, 2025. "Using legitimate music players and paying the appropriate royalties is not merely a duty but also a form of appreciation for the works that have entertained and positively impacted many people," he added.

Furthermore, the role of socialization and monitoring of copyright violations is being reinforced. In collaboration with the National Collective Management Institution (LMKN), both entities are beginning to implement a more equitable, accurate, and transparent royalty distribution system.

Syarifuddin also reminded that the use of music in public spaces or businesses must obtain valid copyright licenses or permissions. He expressed satisfaction with the presence of Velodiva, which is ready to address the concerns of music practitioners.

"If you are playing music in a business or public area, ensure that you are using a music player that complies with the regulations and platforms recommended by LMKN, such as Velodiva," he advised.

Through these initiatives, the government aims to create a healthier and more sustainable music industry ecosystem. Adherence to regulations and appreciation for creative works will also enable artists to gain economic benefits from their creations.
