Deputy Minister of Creative Economy, Irene Umar, stated that the creative economy is a new direction for Indonesia's national development. At the First National Congress of the National Creative Economy Movement (GEKRAFS) in Jakarta on Saturday, Irene called the creative economy Indonesia's "new growth engine" and a powerhouse that unites culture, innovation, and the economy within a framework of sustainable development "Culture is Indonesia's greatest source of wealth, and the creative economy is a way for our culture to shine, not only domestically but also internationally," Irene said. She also considered the spirit of collaboration reflected in the congress to be a strategic strength for the nation, uniting culture, innovation, and the economy in a sustainable manner, which must be jointly safeguarded by all elements of the nation. The congress also served as a series of events leading up to National Creative Economy Day on October 24, which would make Indonesia the first country in the world to have a national day dedicated to this sector. "National Creative Economy Day is not a ceremony. It is a symbol of recognition and a strategy to make creativity the new face of the Indonesian economy," Irene said. GEKRAFS Chairman Wendra Lukistian highlighted the importance of literacy, an inclusive ecosystem, and down-to-earth policies, especially for creative economy activists outside of major cities. He views the younger generation as the backbone of the sector's future. "We still experience a deficit in appreciation for creative economy activists and their work. As long as they are given space, they will be empowered in their own way. This is why GEKRAFS exists," said Wendra. Minister of CultureFadli Zon described creativity and culture as a unified ecosystem. According to Fadli, Indonesia has the potential to become a world cultural capital. "The creative economy and culture must go hand in hand as a national strength capable of opening the world's eyes to Indonesia's richness," he said. State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir also stated that the creative and digital economy are important pillars for achieving the national economic growth target of seven to eight percent. He believes this potential must be developed optimally through cross-sectoral collaboration. The congress emphasized that the creative economy movement is not merely a community activity, but a sustainable development strategy that unites culture, technology, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and diplomacy through nation branding. Also present at the congress were Yovie Widianto, Special Staff to the President for the Creative Economy; Ahmad Ridha Sabana, Special Envoy to the President for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises; Muhammad Akbar Supratman, Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR); and Rocky Candra, Member of the House of Representatives (DPR).
