Not every story from the past deserves a revival. But when it comes to "Petualangan Sherina," it never seems to get old. Since its release in 2000, the story of Sherina, Sadam, and their friends continues to live on in the present day. This legendary film is being presented again in a musical theater performance titled "Musikal Petualangan Sherina," which will be held at Graha Bhakti Budaya, Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Jakarta, from July 11th to 20th. Jakarta Movin proves that an old story can be fresh and highly entertaining. Musikal Petualangan Sherina has been staged four times since its inception in 2017, and is now back to entertain in 2025. An old story wrapped in contemporary element Although based on a classic film deeply rooted in the hearts of many, the show isn't stuck in the past. The production team cleverly modified several elements of the story and dialogue to make it more relevant to today's generation. Fresh humor is added at various points, especially through the characters' quips. Take, for example, several humorous scenes where Sherina, Sadam, and their friends are studying in the classroom. Sadam bluntly asks his teacher why he has to study when he already has the help of ChatGPT. The audience, who weren't expecting anything, burst into laughter, especially millennials and Gen Z, who are very familiar with this technology. Or another scene where three kidnappers, preparing to capture Sherina and Sadam, suddenly break out into a dance routine that's gone viral on TikTok. Pop culture references like these don't feel forced and actually strengthen the connection between the story and today's audience. Acting and Vocals Working on a theatrical performance, especially a musical like "Musikal Petualangan Sherina," is certainly no easy feat. Unlike filmmaking, which can be repeated or cut through editing, theater demands everything happen without pause. The actors, mostly children, are required to have extra stamina because they have to act, sing, and dance simultaneously in front of a live audience, for long, intense sequences. And remarkably, they all do it incredibly well. Sherina's performance on stage doesn't just resemble the original character, both in acting and voice; she brings the character to life with her own unique style. In this performance, Sherina is played by Nadhira Gynta and Annabella Farizky, while Sadam is played by Sahlendra Syarief and Alf Elijah Beloved Sigarlaki. Their voices are clear, their high notes unwavering, and their expressions full of enthusiasm. Likewise, Sadam's performance is irritating from the start but gradually reveals his warm side. The two have solid chemistry. The supporting cast also deserves praise. From the stern yet humorous teacher, to the goofy kidnapper, to Sherina's classmates, everyone performs with energy. Not a single one seems half-hearted, even though the majority of the cast are still children.
