Coordinating Minister For Human Development And Culture: Five Areas Of The Coordinating Ministry Are Disrupted By Technological Developments

Thursday, 17 Jul 2025

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK), Pratikno, stated that five areas of the Ministry of PMK's affairs have been significantly disrupted by technological developments: family and population, health, character education and national identity, disasters, and social conflict.

"In the health sector, for example, people are now lazier due to the use of gadgets, which leads to less physical activity, and even depression due to the overload of information they receive. Furthermore, Indonesians spend an average of 7.5 hours a day watching screen time," said Pratikno during a sharing session with academics from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) in Malang, East Java, on Monday.

He expressed concern not only about the negative implications but also about the disparities in human life. Technology helps increase productivity for those who can utilize it, but those who cannot will certainly be left behind, even becoming victims.

He continued, Indonesia currently ranks third in the world for the most visits to artificial intelligence (AI) applications. He explained how AI is disrupting various fields and its various implications.

According to him, the current technological disruption is different from previous phases of disruption. In the past, when the technological revolution occurred in Europe, it took hundreds of years to reach Indonesia.

Now, he said, when Bill Gates releases a new technology program, it only takes a week, or even a few days, for it to reach Indonesia. This era is the era of convergence and AI, marked by the emergence of AI as a transformative force.

"Various fields are affected by the presence of AI, from politics and democracy, economics and business, education, and others," he said.

Pratikno explained that disruption in education involves a series of patterns of AI use by students, including how AI replaces traditional search engines, grammar checkers, document summaries, paraphrases, and even academic papers.

"Unfortunately, this also has negative implications, namely an increase in cheating and fraud, which are increasingly difficult to detect," he said.
