With Updates, ChatGPT Can 'Think' And 'Act' For Users

Tuesday, 22 Jul 2025

OpenAI announced a new feature in ChatGPT that allows these chatbots to perform actions on behalf of users. This is part of an industry-wide effort to transform the way people do things on the internet.

Several tech giants, including OpenAI, hope that one day, users will be able to rely on their AI agents to perform all their tasks, rather than having to switch between apps and manually search for information on the web.

As reported by CNN on Thursday (July 17), ChatGPT's new agent mode signals that tech giants are increasingly focusing on digital assistants with far more advanced capabilities. This also intensifies the competition between OpenAI and Google

The company says ChatGPT's new mode can "think" and "act" using its own virtual computer, allowing the agent to handle complex, action-oriented requests.

For example, users can issue commands like "look at my calendar and provide a summary of upcoming client meetings based on the latest news" or "plan and purchase ingredients for a Japanese breakfast for four," the company said in a blog post

In a demonstration video, an OpenAI employee wrote a lengthy and detailed prompt asking the agent to help the user prepare for a wedding. The prompt included specific instructions such as "find an outfit that fits the dress code," noting that the agent should suggest five options, along with hotels that can accommodate several spare days around the event

This new feature is available to those with Pro, Plus, or Team plans. It combines and expands the capabilities of OpenAI's existing ChatGPT Operator and Deep Research tools.

This update is the latest step in OpenAI's efforts to transform ChatGPT into a more comprehensive, universal assistant. At the same time, the broader artificial intelligence (AI) industry is also struggling to address significant weaknesses and privacy concerns associated with this technology.
