Without AI Law, Indonesia Will Only Be A Technology Consumer

Thursday, 26 Jun 2025

Several countries such as the European Union, the United States (US), China, Brazil, Canada, and Japan have already drafted or are drafting special regulations related to artificial intelligence (AI). This step reflects their seriousness in facing the challenges and risks posed by the development of AI technology.

In the absence of similar regulations in Indonesia, Professor of Artificial Intelligence at IPB University, Prof. Yeni Herdiyeni, emphasized that Indonesia needs to immediately draft a special law that regulates the development and use of artificial intelligence technology.

This demand was conveyed following the rapid development of AI technology and the risks that accompany it, such as disinformation, algorithm errors, and potential threats to national resilience.

"The law is necessary, because this is a technological product that can have positive and negative impacts," said Prof. Yeni, who is now the Head of the Artificial Intelligence Study Program at IPB University when interviewed

She gave an example of how AI technology has been used in global conflicts, and misused in political contexts, such as in elections, to manipulate public opinion through bots and the spread of disinformation.

According to him, if this regulation continues to be postponed, Indonesia will be left further behind and only become a consumer market for AI technology from abroad.
