The Government of the Republic of Indonesia has strengthened its role as a driving force in the region's digital architecture by initiating the Asian digital diplomacy axis in the international forum of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) Ministerial Meeting 2025 in Tokyo, Japan. Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid represented Indonesia in leading a series of strategic bilateral meetings with Japan, Iran, and Malaysia to strengthen cross-country collaboration in the fields of artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and data governance. "Indonesia believes that a fair and empowering digital future can only be built through investment in society, strengthening local capacity, and complementary cross-country partnerships. We must not widen the digital divide—instead, we must bridge it strategically," said Meutya Hafid in her press statement in Jakarta, Monday. In a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Information and Communication Technology of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Sattar Hashemi, Menkomdigi Meutya emphasized Indonesia's readiness to become a technical partner and reference for digital policies in the region. Meutya proposed the establishment of a technical cooperation mechanism that includes expert exchanges, joint research, and the formulation of data-based digital policies. "As a country that is currently a reference in the development of a digital ecosystem in Asia, Indonesia is ready to share good practices and concrete experiences to build a digital system that is resilient, open, and pro-public service," he said. Strategic cooperation continued with Malaysia, bringing together the Minister of Communication and Digital with the Malaysian Minister of Communication Datuk Ahmad Fahmi bin Mohamed Fadzli. Indonesia expressed its full support for the implementation of the ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit 2025 which will be held next August. This forum is considered crucial in strengthening artificial intelligence governance in the ASEAN region. "AI is not just technology, but an important tool to shape an inclusive and humane digital future. Indonesia is ready to collaborate in the preparation of regional standards, development of digital talent, and harmonization of cross-country policies," said the Minister of Communication and Digital. Meutya also emphasized that Indonesia and Malaysia have long had a close partnership in cross-border digital connectivity, development of the digital economy, and cybersecurity dialogue based on the principles of mutual respect and shared growth.
