Indonesia And Slovakia Aim To Establish Inclusive AI Governance

Tuesday, 27 May 2025

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia and Slovakia are exploring opportunities to establish an alliance aimed at creating an inclusive global governance framework for artificial intelligence (AI) in anticipation of the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) Summit to be held in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The potential collaboration between the two nations to achieve inclusive AI governance was discussed during a meeting between the Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital of Indonesia, Nezar Patria, and the Slovak Ambassador to Indonesia, Tomas Ferko, at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Office in Central Jakarta on Friday, May 23.

"We recognize the gap in AI development between Northern and Southern countries, so we do not wish to remain merely users; we aspire to advance significantly as AI developers," Nezar stated, as quoted in the ministry's press release in Jakarta on Saturday.

The GPAI Summit is scheduled to take place from November 25 to 26, 2025.

Indonesia, which is in the process of acceding to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), has been invited to participate in this AI forum.

Nezar noted that Slovakia is one of the pioneers in formulating the OECD AI principles, which have now become a global reference.

"This collaboration is crucial for Indonesia, which is currently finalizing its national AI regulations," Nezar remarked regarding the planned cooperation with Slovakia.

Following the issuance of the Minister of Communication and Informatics of Indonesia Circular Letter Number 9 of 2023 concerning AI Ethics, the Indonesian government is developing a National AI Roadmap and preparing a draft presidential regulation on the development and utilization of AI.

"We are now genuinely interested in the policy-making process regarding AI, as there is no ideal benchmark that can be met by all countries, given that each country has its own needs and challenges," Nezar added.

The alliance with Slovakia is also expected to provide opportunities for mutual learning regarding AI regulations.
