Understanding "DeepSeek": The Chinese AI Technology Application That Has Caused A Stir

At the beginning of 2025, the technology sector was stirred by the introduction of "DeepSeek," an artificial intelligence (AI)-based chatbot application from China. "DeepSeek" made headlines by surpassing ChatGPT as the most downloaded free application in the United States via the Apple App Store on Monday, January 27, 2025. 

According to CNBC International on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, DeepSeek, with its AI assistant application, pushed ChatGPT into the second position. Additionally, DeepSeek's emergence has placed significant pressure on global technology stocks, potentially erasing billions of dollars in market capitalization. One of the most notable impacts of DeepSeek's success is the upheaval it has caused in the global technology stock market. 

"DeepSeek" was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, a Chinese hedge fund manager with a grand vision for AI development. Remarkably, DeepSeek AI achieved extraordinary milestones in a short period, demonstrating that technological innovation does not always require substantial resources, contrary to common belief. 

The official journey of DeepSeek AI began in April 2023 when High-Flyer established a general artificial intelligence laboratory, which later evolved into an independent company in May 2023. Although the company initially faced challenges in securing venture capital funding due to perceptions of difficulty in achieving quick exits, this did not deter DeepSeek from pursuing innovation. 

What sets DeepSeek apart from its competitors is its unwavering focus on research without a detailed commercial plan. This strategy not only allows the company greater freedom in innovation but also helps it navigate the stricter AI regulations in China concerning consumer-oriented technology.
