Reduce Emissions: Four Industrial Sectors Urged To Implement CCU Technology

Friday, 31 Jan 2025

The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has urged the cement, fertilizer, iron and steel, as well as pulp and paper industries to adopt carbon capture utilization (CCU) technology to mitigate carbon emissions. The Secretary General of Kemenperin, Eko S A Cahyanto, stated that these four subsectors significantly contribute to the total carbon emissions of the national industry. Consequently, Kemenperin is collaborating with UWin Resources Regeneration Inc., a developer of carbon capture and industrial emission reduction (CCIER) technologies, to advance CCU technology aimed at reducing emissions in the petrochemical sector.

"The pilot project we are implementing at PT Petrokimia Gresik is a crucial initial step," Eko remarked in a written statement on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. "We hope that CCU technology can be widely applied, not only in the petrochemical sector but also in other sectors that produce high carbon emissions," he added.

Additionally, the ministry has identified nine priority industrial subsectors that will be the main focus in the decarbonization efforts.

Eko explained that CCU captures carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial processes, processes it, and transforms it into products that can be utilized by other industrial sectors. This approach allows industries to reduce emissions while simultaneously generating economically valuable products. "In efforts to mitigate the impact of air pollutants and/or greenhouse gas emissions from production processes, the industrial sector contributes to emission reduction by achieving the Enhanced NDC targets for lowering greenhouse gas emissions," Eko elaborated. The CCU pilot project also aims to accelerate the transition towards sustainable green industry in Indonesia.
