The Government Promises Affordable Fixed Wireless Technology For Rural Areas

Saturday, 14 Dec 2024

The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) is set to expedite the exploration of fixed wireless technology, specifically 5G, to address fundamental issues related to the accessibility of digital infrastructure in Indonesia.

Minister Meutya Hafid highlighted that the digital divide remains significantly pronounced in the country, with only 56 percent of villages connected via fiber optic cables.

Access to the internet is crucial and plays a vital role in nearly all aspects of life, including local governance, healthcare, education, and public services. Furthermore, the development of digital infrastructure is essential to support the growth of the digital economy in Indonesia.

In regard to the 5G exploration, Meutya stated, "Therefore, by 2025, Kemkomdigi will accelerate the exploration of fixed wireless technology or 5G," during the Indonesia Digital Economy Outlook 2025 event on December 13, 2024.

Meutya explained that the procurement of this technology will be prioritized for areas lacking fiber optic connectivity, particularly for communities that currently struggle to access standard internet services. She also asserted that the implementation of this technology is expected to provide high-quality internet at affordable prices, thereby increasing internet accessibility for a larger segment of the population.

"This internet service will indeed be much cheaper while offering better quality. The implementation is projected to deliver affordable, high-quality internet for the Indonesian populace," Meutya remarked.

Regarding sustainable financing, her presentation indicated that the ministry is conducting assessments on various aspects to prepare for this infrastructure, including tax holidays, green energy-based data centers, and the implementation of carbon pricing.

"The evaluation of fiscal incentives and sustainable financing to accelerate investment is a key focus in the development of digital infrastructure," Meutya noted in her presentation materials.
