Tuesday, 06 May 2025

Indonesia through the Ministry of Culture participated in the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 forum in Mumbai, India on Friday (2/5). On that occasion, Minister of Culture Fadli Zon highlighted the high potential of culture as a driver of industry and the economy of a country.

In the Global Media Dialogue session which was also attended by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as ministers of culture from 22 countries, the Indonesian Minister of Culture conveyed the importance of global synergy in building an inclusive and sustainable future for the media and entertainment industry.

"Audio visual and cultural industries are not just entertainment sectors. They are engines of innovation, drivers of development, and pillars of social cohesion that are capable of transforming the economy and social structure," said Fadli as reported by an official broadcast, Saturday (3/5).

He said that the establishment of the Ministry of Culture as a separate entity in 2024 reflects Indonesia's commitment to making culture a strategic pillar of national development. This vision is based on the 1945 Constitution and aims to preserve cultural heritage while contributing to the global cultural ecosystem.

Indonesia, said Fadli, is a mega-diverse country with more than 1,340 ethnic groups, 718 regional languages, and thousands of intangible cultural sites and expressions. The country also has 60% of the world's Homo erectus fossils and the oldest prehistoric cave paintings dating back 52,000 years.

"This is not just a cultural wealth, but a storytelling superpower," he continued.

Specifically related to the creative industry, Fadli highlighted the great potential of Indonesia's creative industry. With more than 12 million creators and 52% of the population under 30 years old, Indonesia is a dynamic market and major producer of content in Southeast Asia.

"Our local animation, 'Jumbo', has just surpassed Disney Frozen 2 in terms of viewers in Southeast Asia," he said.

Fadli also emphasized the importance of supporting a sustainable ecosystem through training, funding such as Dana Indonesiana, and digital innovation based on cultural heritage. On that occasion, the Minister also stated Indonesia's openness to collaboration, sharing knowledge, and forming a new era of cross-country media cooperation.

WAVES 2025 according to Fadli is a strategic stage for Indonesia to open up opportunities for dialogue related to the cultural industry in the future. He is targeting Indonesia to become a major player in the global cultural industry.
