Indonesia Voices AI As The Future Of All Nations At The MCS 2025 Forum

Monday, 28 Apr 2025

Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid representing Indonesia in the international technology forum Machines Can See (MCS) 2025 voiced that artificial intelligence (AI) is the future of all nations, not limited to a handful of countries.

In a panel session titled “Wanted: AI to Retain and Attract Talents to the Country,” Meutya called for the need to build an AI ecosystem that is ethical, inclusive, and reflects the diversity of the world.

“Technology must reflect the diversity of the world, not just the priority of a handful of people,” said Meutya when appearing as a speaker at the international forum “Machines Can See 2025” which took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Wednesday.

In the event, Meutya also said that Indonesia is in a very strategic phase demographically, digitally, and geopolitically to develop AI as the future and heritage of the world.

According to her, with more than 212 million active internet users and the status as the fourth most populous country in the world, Indonesia is committed to being an active part in shaping the future of global technology.

The Minister of Communication and Digital also emphasized the similarity of approaches that Indonesia has built with BRICS countries in creating a responsible AI ecosystem.

The main focus includes equal access, strengthening the perspective of the global south, and utilizing AI to address real challenges for society.

"Indonesia's initiatives with the BRICS dialogue increasingly cover issues such as bridging the digital divide, advancing smart rural solutions, and maintaining data sovereignty, such as AI-based disaster monitoring, smart agriculture, and remote health diagnostics," she said.

Furthermore, Meutya explained that currently there are three aspects that are of great concern to the Indonesian government, namely education, food security and the provision of public services.

So that AI can also be useful for the development of the country, the Indonesian government is trying to implement AI as a solution for these three aspects.

For example, building AI applications for food security, as well as a social protection system that will be launched in August 2025.

"Food security is a concern for President Prabowo, especially amidst the current geopolitical situation. And also education is a fundamental belief that Indonesia holds firmly, because with AI, we believe that AI is not only that, those who design and manage AI must be smarter than AI itself," said Meutya.

In the field of digital infrastructure, Meutya said that it is a big challenge to connect 17,000 Indonesian islands evenly. To overcome this, the government is currently preparing an auction of 2.6 and 3.5 GHz spectrum and expanding fiber optic and submarine cable networks. Other steps being taken include consolidating the telecommunications industry and developing a low-latency national data center to support optimal AI integration. "This is progress, but it still reminds us of the scale of the challenge of building fast and reliable connectivity across 17,000 islands in Indonesia," she said.
