The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkodigi) has invited Amazon Kuiper, a key player in the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite industry, to collaborate and operate in Indonesia, aiming to enhance digital connectivity across the archipelago. "We welcome Amazon Kuiper's commitment to supporting the expansion of digital connectivity in Indonesia. We are open to any investments and new technologies that can assist us in achieving connectivity throughout the country," stated the Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, during a meeting with representatives from Amazon Kuiper at the Kemkomdigi office in Jakarta on Monday. This collaboration is expected to significantly improve digital connectivity in remote, outermost, and disadvantaged areas (3T) that are often underserved by backbone infrastructure such as fiber optic cables, thereby facilitating the acceleration of Indonesia's digital transformation. Meutya Hafid emphasized the crucial role of satellite technology in bridging the digital divide, particularly in isolated regions. As an initial step in response to Kemkomdigi's invitation, Amazon Kuiper plans to establish six gateway stations in Indonesia, with an initial investment of 20 million USD (approximately 328 billion IDR at an exchange rate of 1 USD = 16,400 IDR) over the first three to five years following the launch. This investment is projected to increase to 90 million USD (around 1.4 trillion IDR) by 2035 to expand infrastructure and enhance internet access in various regions. Additionally, Amazon Kuiper is in the process of applying for operational permits in Indonesia, including telecommunications licenses and satellite borrowing rights, in accordance with the latest regulations that allow foreign companies to operate with a Business Identification Number (NIB).
