The Collaboration Between Government And Private Sector In Combating Online Gambling

Friday, 22 Nov 2024

The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) has identified online gambling as a significant issue confronting the Indonesian government.

In the first quarter of 2024, the financial turnover associated with online gambling reached an alarming Rp110 trillion. Among this turnover, approximately 197,540 children aged between 11 and 19 years engaged in online gambling transactions totaling Rp293.4 billion.

In response to this situation, the government has established an Online Gambling Task Force through Presidential Decree No. 21/2024, aimed at accelerating the eradication of online gambling activities in a decisive and coordinated manner.

Furthermore, PPATK has collaborated with private entities, such as PT Visionet Internasional (OVO), to host a National Seminar titled "Combating Online Gambling and New Crimes in the 5.0 Digital Economy Era" on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.

Karaniya Dharmasaputra, the President Director of OVO, expressed full support for and collaboration with the government and regulators, including PPATK, the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi), Bank Indonesia (BI), and the Financial Services Authority (OJK) in the fight against online gambling.

"Today, we are launching GEBUK JUDOL (Joint Movement to Expose Online Gambling) through a multi-stakeholder collaboration and the optimization of technology to conduct cyber patrols, prevent, and detect online gambling transactions, including blocking accounts confirmed to be related to online gambling," stated Karaniya in an official statement on November 19, 2024.

Meanwhile, Ivan Yustiavandana, the head of PPATK, noted that this national seminar is part of the 22nd National Movement against Money Laundering, Terrorism Financing Prevention, and Proliferation Financing of Weapons of Mass Destruction (APUPPT and PPPSPM).

Currently, the facts indicate that the transactions associated with online gambling are decreasing in size, yet the number of players is increasing, resulting in a larger cumulative volume of transactions related to online gambling, as stated by Ivan during the same occasion.

For your information, the Task Force for the Eradication of Illegal Financial Activities (Satgas Pasti), which comprises various entities such as the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs (Kemenpolkam), Bank Indonesia (BI), the Financial Services Authority (OJK), and law enforcement agencies, has blocked a total of 9,062 illegal financial entities from 2017 to 2024.

Furthermore, Komdigi has successfully blocked access to 5.1 million online gambling sites within the community, employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology as one of the methods for site blocking.
