PT Kayan Hydro Energy (PT KHE) has announced its investment in the development of the Kayan Cascade Hydroelectric Power Plant and is eager to collaborate with various parties that have the readiness and experience in hydroelectric investments. This was revealed after a business meeting with several leading Japanese energy companies in Tokyo, Japan. The meeting, held on July 18, 2024, was attended by executives from eight major Japanese energy firms, including J-Power, Sojitz Corporation, and Marubeni Corporation. The event was organized in conjunction with the 2nd Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting and was led by Indonesia's Ambassador to Japan, Heri Akhmadi. Following this meeting facilitated by the Ambassador, PT KHE held a separate business discussion with the Japanese energy executives. During this meeting, PT KHE provided updates on the Kayan Cascade hydroelectric project and emphasized their commitment to equal partnership. The outcome of the meeting was positive for PT KHE, the initiator and owner of the Kayan Cascade project, and will be followed up. PT KHE's CEO, Andrew Sebastian Suryali, expressed that the company is ready to form equal partnerships with firms from anywhere. "We are very optimistic about this opportunity. PT KHE is prepared to work on this project to make the Kayan Cascade Hydroelectric Power Plant a driving force for green energy in Indonesia," Andrew stated at KHE's headquarters in Jakarta on Monday, August 12. The Kayan Cascade Hydroelectric Power Plant is a strategic project aimed at constructing a series of hydroelectric plants along the Kayan River Basin in North Kalimantan. With a total capacity of 9,000 MW and an estimated cost of USD 17.8 billion, the project is expected to generate 36 Terawatt-hours of electricity annually, significantly contributing to reducing national electricity costs.

The Operations Director of PT KHE, Sapta Nugraha, shared that the project is already in progress and the infrastructure development has reached a significant stage. "Construction is going smoothly, and we are making sure that the Kayan Cascade hydropower project stays on track," Sapta mentioned at PT KHE's headquarters. The Kayan Cascade hydropower project not only supports the AZEC initiative focused on sustainability and green technology but also reinforces Indonesia's commitment to a cleaner energy transition. "We believe this project will speed up Indonesia's shift to green energy and lessen reliance on conventional energy sources," Andrew stated.
