Prabowo Aims To Construct 1 Million Units Of Apartments, Inspired By Singapore

Monday, 16 Jun 2025

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has expressed his commitment to constructing 1 million affordable apartment units within the first year of his administration.

In the presence of Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and high-ranking officials from both nations, the Head of State noted that this commitment is inspired by the success of Singapore's public housing policy, which serves as a best practice example in the region.

"I am proud to announce that I have received reports indicating that this year we will build one million affordable apartment units," President Prabowo stated during his state address at Parliament House, which was also streamed online by the Presidential Secretariat in Jakarta on Monday.

On this occasion, President Prabowo expressed his admiration for Singapore's success in providing housing for its citizens.

"I have always admired Singapore's achievements, particularly in terms of housing for all its citizens. In real life, we are allowed to emulate best practices. This is what I refer to as 'copy with pride,'" he remarked.

Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia will continue the initiative for affordable housing development initiated by the 6th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and the 7th President, Joko Widodo, on a larger scale and with accelerated construction.

"I am proud to announce that I have received reports indicating that this year we will construct 1 million affordable apartment units," he stated.

The Indonesian government is collaborating with investors from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to address the national housing backlog crisis, with plans to build 1 million apartment units in Jakarta, particularly on the land of the former DPR complex in Kalibata, South Jakarta.

This plan is targeted at the millennial and Gen Z generations who are struggling to own or rent homes in the capital due to the high property prices.

Previously reported, the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo, stated that this project is part of efforts to reduce housing inequality that forces young generations to live in buffer areas such as Serang and Purwakarta.

As part of the goal to construct 3 million houses, the government is also preparing additional strategic lands, such as 30 hectares in Kemayoran owned by the State Secretariat and 41 hectares under the Ministry of Defense.
