Support Sustainable Logistics Industry, PIS Aims To Reduce Emissions By 33% In 2030

Monday, 15 Jul 2024

PIS is focusing on green business or sustainable business to support the government's commitment to achieve Net Zero Emission by 2060. In order to achieve this commitment, PIS aims to reduce 33% of total carbon emissions in the company's operations by the end of 2030.

PIS has developed a number of strategies to reduce its carbon emissions. Some of them include the use of green ships, alternative fuels, green terminals, and carbon capture & storage. These steps were presented by PIS at the Federation of International Freight Forwarders Associations Region Asia Pacific (FIATA RAP) 2024 forum in Bali, Thursday (11/7).

PIS Business Planning Director Eka Suhendra stated in the forum, "This strategy reflects our seriousness as a major player in the energy logistics sector in Southeast Asia to lead decarbonization efforts, in line with the goals of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Pertamina's commitment to achieve Net Zero Emission by 2060. One of the initial steps is targeting a 33% reduction in carbon emissions from 24.5 kTCO2e per year to 978.6 kTCO2e per year by 2030."

PIS has already implemented green transformation quickly, such as fleet rejuvenation with more environmentally friendly ships and the use of alternative fuels like dual-fuel and biodiesel. Not stopping there, several future initiatives have also been started.

PIS plans to continue modernizing its fleet with more energy-efficient features, expanding the use of alternative fuels, and investing to be ready to be part of the negative carbon business chain Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS).

Regarding CCS, PIS is preparing to fill the necessary transportation chain for carbon transport. "To support the government's commitment to achieve Net Zero Emission, we will invest in LCO2 (liquid carbon dioxide) transport ships and receiving terminals," added Eka.

Not only that, PIS recently upgraded the capabilities of the TanjungSekong LPG Terminal by integrating several advanced technologies. The technological improvements at the LPG terminal located in Cilegon, Banten, make the management and distribution of LPG more efficient and integrated.

Operating since 2012, this terminal covers an area of up to 12.9 hectares and has a storage capacity of 98,000 Metric Tons (MT) or 196,000 Cubic Meters (CBM). In 2020, the TanjungSekong LPG Terminal was upgraded to a Refrigerated LPG Terminal with three docks that can accommodate vessels ranging from 3,500 to 65,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT), facilitating efficient LPG import and export operations.

The TanjungSekong LPG Terminal is one of six strategic energy terminals managed by PIS through PT Pertamina Energy Terminal (PET). PET oversees several key terminals across Indonesia, including the Integrated Terminal TanjungUban (Riau Islands), Fuel Terminal PulauSambu (Riau Islands), Fuel Terminal Kotabaru (South Kalimantan), Fuel Terminal Baubau (Southeast Sulawesi), and the Refrigerated LPG Terminal Tuban (East Java). Moreover, PIS is currently developing the Jakarta Integrated Green Terminal in TanjungPriok, Jakarta, aimed at managing various green energies in the future.

All of these initiatives demonstrate PIS's commitment to practicing sustainable business practices while meeting the national energy resilience efforts. PIS also ensures that the green transformation continues in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the implementation of Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) efforts across the company's business and operational lines.
