The Indonesian Post
The Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) notes that more than 60-70 percent of vehicles circulating in Indonesia are locally produced. This indicates that the automotive industry is the only industry that remains at home. "So, in fact, we are at home," said Gaikindo Chairman Yohannes Nangoi on Metro TV's Primetime News program, Tuesday, August 5, 2025. Not only is the automotive industry a powerhouse at home, but it also boasts impressive export records. Gaikindo has recorded more than 500,000 units of completely built vehicles in recent years. These vehicles are not only exported to developing countries. Even Japan, renowned for its automotive excellence, is a major export destination. According to Nangoi, the average number of vehicles exported to Japan reaches 26,000 annually. This means that around 2,000 finished cars from Indonesia are exported to Japan each month. "Japan has very high standards for safety, comfort, and all that. This shows that we are capable of achieving this," said Yohanes. Overall, finished vehicles from Indonesia have been exported to more than 90 countries, with over 500,000 cars recorded. Yohanes is optimistic that the Indonesian automotive industry will continue to thrive in the future. "We will continue to improve this. We are targeting major countries, such as Australia, which imports a large number of vehicles, and we want to source more from Indonesia," Yohanes said.
