PT Handal Indonesia Motor: China's Car Assembly Center In Indonesia

Monday, 14 Jul 2025

The rise of Chinese car brands in Indonesia over the past two years has increased demand for local vehicle assembly services. One company inundated with orders is PT Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM), which has now become a key partner for various automotive brands. HIM currently handles assembly for nine brands: Chery, Neta, Geely, BAIC, Jetour, Jaecoo, Aletra, Polytron, and Xpeng.

The company also facilitates the assembly of Pindad's Maung MV3 tactical vehicles.

HIM's Chief Executive Officer, Denny Siregar, stated that the collaboration with these brands has been ongoing for the past three to four years. Several of them are now producing vehicles consistently every month at Handal's factory in Pondok Ungu, Bekasi, West Java.

"We started about three to four years ago with Neta and Chery. Now we have nine brands, and the factory in Pondok Ungu, Bekasi, is operating optimally," Denny told Kompas.com on Tuesday (July 8, 2025). In addition to Bekasi, Handal is also expanding its facilities and production capacity by opening a new factory in Purwakarta, West Java. Although not yet officially opened, the factory has already begun initial operations with a projected capacity of 32,000 units per year in one shift.

On the same occasion, Denny explained that the duration of assembly contracts varies, depending on each brand's strategy and production scale. However, the average is between three and five years. "These contracts are not all the same because they depend on the brand's initiative. For example, Chery already has a large product line, so their investment returns quickly, so the contracts are usually shorter. If the volume is small, the contract duration is longer," Denny explained.
