BEV Electric Car Trend In Indonesia May 2025 Drops

Wednesday, 25 Jun 2025

The sales trend of battery electric vehicles (BEV) in Indonesia during the May 2025 period experienced a slowdown. Based on data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), the total distribution of these environmentally friendly vehicles from factories to dealers (wholesales) was only 6,335 units, down around 14 percent compared to the previous month. However, this does not change the competitive landscape, where electric cars from China continue to dominate.

Names such as BYD, Wuling, and Chery continue to dominate the market thanks to competitive pricing strategies, the presence of new models, and the expansion of after-sales services.

The top position for the best-selling electric car is occupied by the BYD Sealion 7 with a distribution of 1,232 units, followed by the BYD M6 (1,184 units) and Denza D9 (630 units). All three are models that have only been marketed in Indonesia in the last few months, indicating the success of the market penetration strategy carried out by BYD and Denza, two brands under the BYD Group. Chery J6 ranks fourth with a distribution of 580 units, indicating that the brand is consistently gaining ground in the EV segment. Meanwhile, Wuling Air EV and Wuling Cloud EV, which previously dominated compact BEV sales, are now in fifth and sixth place respectively with 419 units. Hyundai, the pioneer of electric cars from South Korea, is still in the middle of the board with Ioniq 5 (226 units) and Kona EV (51 units), although it is now starting to be displaced by the invasion of Chinese products with more competitive prices.
