Monday, 16 Jun 2025

The Indonesian automotive market is still under pressure in May 2025.

Based on data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) quoted on Wednesday (11/6), wholesale car sales (factory to dealer) were recorded at 60,613 units, down 15.1% annually (YoY) compared to May 2024 of 71,391 units

A similar decline occurred in retail sales (dealer to consumer) which only reached 61,339 units, also down 15.1% (YoY).

Toyota Dominates, BYD and Chery Are Getting Faste

Amid the sluggish market, Toyota continues to dominate with the highest sales in May 2025 of 20,995 units, even jumping 30.6% compared to April.

Daihatsu is in second place with 11,166 units, growing 25.7% monthly. Mitsubishi Motors surged to third place with 4,756 units, replacing Suzuki (3,921 units) and Honda (3,166 units).

Chinese brands showed impressive performance with BYD recording 2,799 units, Chery posting 1,993 units, and Wuling selling 1,566 units.

Weakening Purchasing Power, Market Not Yet Recovered

Gaikindo Chairman Jongkie Sugiarto said the downward trend was caused by weakening consumer purchasing power and economic instability.

"The main factor in the current decline in car sales is the decline in consumers' ability to buy new vehicles," he explained.

Cumulatively, car sales from January to May 2025 (wholesales) were recorded at 316,981 units, down 5.5% compared to the same period last year (335,405 units).

Retail sales fell even deeper, 9.2% to 328,852 units from the previous 362,163 units.
