Two prominent Japanese automotive giants, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Honda Motor Co., Ltd., have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to integrate their businesses. The two companies plan to establish a joint parent company. Thoshihiro Mibe, Director and Representative Executive Officer of Honda, stated that the merger between Honda and Nissan is still under review. He noted that while the two companies have distinct characteristics, he believes that their unification could enhance resources and technology to tackle new challenges in the automotive industry. "We have not yet decided on business integration, but we are exploring the possibility of such integration by the end of January 2025," Thoshihiro mentioned during a press conference on Monday, December 23, 2024, as reported in an official statement. Meanwhile, Makoto Uchida, President and CEO of Nissan, remarked that the initial discussions between the two companies mark a significant milestone. Makoto expressed optimism that if the two entities merge, they could strengthen their competitiveness in the global automotive industry. "Together, we can create unique ways for customers to enjoy vehicles that neither company could achieve alone," stated Makoto. Previously, Nissan and Honda had collaborated several times throughout 2024. On March 15, they signed an MoU regarding a strategic partnership focused on vehicle intelligence and electrification. Since then, both companies have engaged in discussions aimed at collaboration across various sectors.
