Jokowi Said Not To Advance As Candidate For General Chair, PSI: In Politics, There Are Front And Backstage Positions

Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) Congress, Andy Budiman, stated that in the world of politics, a person can have a role in front of or behind the scenes. This was conveyed by Andy in response to the news that the seventh President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, would not run as a candidate for PSI general chairman in order to provide opportunities for the younger generation. "Yesterday, Mas Kaesang (PSI General Chairman Kaesang Pangarep) already conveyed the reason that he gave opportunities to young people, so Mas Kaesang is the one who is running. So I think that's a good gesture," said Andy at the PSI DPP Office, Monday (6/23/2025). "And don't forget that in politics there are many positions in front (formal), there are informal positions, there are positions behind the scenes, there are positions in front, and so on, please interpret it yourself," he added. 

Nevertheless, Andy emphasized that PSI still respects Jokowi's decision in the PSI general chairman nomination exchange. 

He considered that Jokowi as a national figure must have mature considerations in taking his political steps. "Of course we respect if Mr. Jokowi is still a national figure. National figures must have considerations before making any decision," said Andy. "What is clear, what Mas Kaesang said yesterday was quite clear, I think. So Mas Kaesang asked for permission to give young people the opportunity to lead. I myself do not have the capacity to represent Mr. Jokowi," he said. Previously, Kaesang said that he decided to run as a candidate for general chairman after talking to Jokowi, his own father, because according to him, it is impossible for a father and son to compete for a position. "Regarding whether he (Jokowi) will become General Chairman or not, we have discussed that in the past week. It is also impossible for a son and father to compete with each other," said Kaesang at the PSI DPP Office, Jakarta, Saturday (6/21/2025). So far, there have been three people who have registered as candidates for PSI general chairman, namely Kaesang Pangarep, Deputy Chairman of PSI West Java Ronald A Sinaga alias Bro Ron, and PSI Spokesperson Agus Mulyono Herlambang. Registration for PSI general chairman candidates will close on Monday night at 23.59 WIB.
