Prabowo Issues Polemic Decision On Four Aceh-North Sumatra Islands Next Week

Tuesday, 17 Jun 2025

President Prabowo Subianto will issue a decision regarding the polemic of the four Aceh islands that are now part of North Sumatra Province next week.

This was conveyed by Deputy Speaker of the DPR Sufmi Dasco after establishing intensive communication with the President, Saturday (6/14/2025).

"The President will make a decision about this next week," said Dasco.

Dasco said that from the results of communication between the DPR and the President, it was decided that the polemic would be completely taken over by Prabowo

"The results of communication between the DPR RI and the President of the Republic of Indonesia are that the President is taking over the issue of island boundaries which is the dynamic between Aceh Province and North Sumatra Province," said Dasco.

Aceh-North Sumatra Polemic

As is known, this polemic began with the issuance of the Decree of the Ministry of Home Affairs Number 300.2.2-2138 of 2025 concerning the Provision and Updating of Codes and Data on Government Administration Areas and Islands, which was stipulated on April 25, 2025, stating that four islands belonging to Aceh are included in the Central Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra Province.

The Aceh Provincial Government has repeatedly emphasized that it has strong evidence that Panjang Island, Lipan, Mangkir Gadang, and Mangkir Ketek Island have indeed belonged to Aceh since long ago. He firmly rejected the transfer of the four islands to North Sumatra (Sumut).

"Yes, the four islands are actually Aceh's authority. So we have strong reasons, strong evidence, strong data, that in ancient times, they did belong to Aceh," Mualem told reporters in Jakarta, Thursday (12/6/2025).

Meanwhile, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian insisted that this determination had gone through a long process and involved many related agencies. He admitted that this process had been going on for a long time, even before he became a minister.
