Political Parties Hesitant To Talk About 2029 Causes Drafting Of Political Package Bill To Stall

Monday, 19 May 2025

The drafting of the Political Package Bill as a step to revise the Election and Regional Election Laws is considered unclear because political parties are still hesitant to discuss the direction of politics in 2029.

This was conveyed by Senior Researcher of the Indonesian Parliamentary Concerned Community Forum (Formappi), Lucius Karus, when contacted by the RMOL Economic and Political News Agency, Wednesday, May 14, 2025.

"The DPR's lack of seriousness in discussing the Election Bill cannot be separated from the unclear position of parliamentary political parties in preparing for the 2029 Election," he said.

Lucius believes that the lawmakers deliberately delayed the discussion of the Political Package Bill because it is directly related to their interests in the future.

"Discussion of the Election Bill has always been carried out before the start of the Election implementation stages," he said.

He believes that the Election Bill will be a weapon for political parties to determine the direction of politics in 2029.

"The Election Bill is always used as part of the initial strategy of political parties to prepare for winning the Election," he said.

Therefore, Lucius believes that there will be a number of material arrangements in the Election and Regional Election Laws that will be passed, for the sake of future victories.

"Therefore, the discussion process will always be tough regarding several crucial issues, such as the threshold because the size of the threshold will directly impact the winning strategy of political parties in the Election," he said.

"So if the Election is still far away and political parties are wanting to enjoy the power they have now, then don't expect them to feel it is important and urgent to discuss the Election Bill now," added Lucius.
