Expert: PKS Suggests Sohibul Iman As A Valuable Asset In The Jakarta Election

Jakarta National Development University (UPN) Veteran political science expert Ardli Johan Kusuma analyzes the decision of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) to nominate Vice Chairman of the PKS Shuro Council Mohamad Sohibul Iman in the Jakarta regional head election as a strategic move to strengthen their negotiating power.

In a statement given from Jakarta on Tuesday, Kusuma stated that this move aims to enhance PKS's leverage when dealing with potential coalition partners and individuals from outside the party.

He further emphasized that the selection of Sohibul Iman as a gubernatorial candidate for Jakarta remains fluid and subject to change in the upcoming period.

Kusuma highlighted the importance of forming alliances with other political parties to secure the positions of Jakarta governor and vice governor. He noted that if PKS fails to garner support for Sohibul Iman's candidacy, they may need to reassess their strategy and consider alternative scenarios, such as reverting to their original plan of nominating him as the deputy governor candidate.

However, he mentioned that PKS currently holds the highest vote acquisition in the Pileg DPRD DKI Jakarta during the 2024 Election, with 1,012,028 votes or 16.68 per cent.

Moreover, he pointed out that PKS's bargaining power may be compromised if they persist in endorsing Sohibul Iman, who is not as recognized as potential figures like Anies Baswedan and Ridwan Kamil in the Jakarta Pilkada.

He stated, "If PKS decides to nominate Sohibul Iman as DKI's candidate, they will face significant challenges. Firstly, they need to secure support from other parties to form a coalition in favor of Sohibul Iman."

He added, "Even if they manage to form a coalition, the next hurdle will be enhancing Sohibul Iman's electability to compete against well-known candidates. This will undoubtedly pose a major challenge for PKS."

PKS has officially nominated Mohamad Sohibul Iman, the Deputy Chairman of the PKS Shuro Assembly, as their candidate for the 2024 Jakarta Pilkada. "Mohamad Sohibul Iman, our candidate, currently holds the position of Deputy Chairman of the PKS Shuro Council," stated PKS spokesperson Ahmad Mabruri in a press release received by Indonesia Window on Sunday (23/6). PKS, having secured the highest number of votes in Jakarta during the 2024 elections, has chosen to put forward their top cadre as a gubernatorial candidate for the upcoming election. Mabruri emphasized that Sohibul Iman is a reputable figure with integrity and exceptional qualifications.
