The General Election Commission of the Republic of Indonesia (KPU RI) has announced that 21 provinces will officially appoint their regional leaders resulting from the 2024 local elections this Thursday. In a statement made in Jakarta on Thursday, KPU RI Chairman Mochammad Afifuddin clarified that this appointment can proceed depending on whether there are any disputes regarding the election results (PHPKADA) submitted to the Constitutional Court (MK). He noted that according to the Constitutional Case Registration Book (BRPK), there are 23 PHPKADA cases concerning governors and vice governors across 16 provinces. Additionally, there are 238 PHPKADA cases related to regents and vice regents, as well as 49 cases for mayors and vice mayors, distributed across 233 districts and cities. "Based on the data from the BRPK, the KPU has recorded that 21 provinces and 275 districts/cities do not have any PHPKADA applications pending at the MK, allowing the Provincial KPU and the District/City KPU in these areas to proceed to the stage of appointing the elected candidates," stated Afifuddin. Furthermore, he listed the 21 provinces that will appoint their regional leaders as Aceh, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bengkulu, Lampung, Riau Islands, the Special Capital Region of Jakarta, West Java, and Banten. The list continues with Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Gorontalo, West Sulawesi, Maluku, and West Papua. Additionally, he mentioned that for regions with PHPKADA cases, the KPU, as the respondent, is scheduled to provide testimony during the hearings at the MK from January 17 to February 4, 2025.
