The Stance Of Political Parties Regarding The Elimination Of The Presidential Nomination Threshold

Thursday, 09 Jan 2025

Political parties have expressed their views regarding the Constitutional Court's decision to eliminate the presidential threshold. This ruling has opened opportunities for all participating political parties in the election to nominate their own presidential candidates. Previously, under the presidential threshold, political parties were required to form coalitions to meet the 20 percent vote requirement in order to nominate a president and vice president. What is the stance of the political parties in the House of Representatives regarding this Constitutional Court decision? Do all parties view it positively?

Support for the Constitutional Court's Decision

The parties that have welcomed this decision claim to have long advocated for the removal of the presidential threshold. Which parties are in favor?

Justice and Prosperity Party

Hidayat Nur Wahid, Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council of the Justice and Prosperity Party (PKS), expressed gratitude for the abolition of the 20 percent presidential threshold. However, he believes that the Court should have eliminated this provision much earlier. "We at PKS support the Constitutional Court's decision, even if it is delayed. After many parties, including PKS, submitted judicial reviews regarding the 20 percent threshold, we are grateful that the Court has finally granted it," stated HNW.

Democratic Party

In agreement with PKS, the Democratic Party also holds the view that the presidential threshold should have been abolished. "We are not surprised by the Constitutional Court's decision, as it is indeed what should have happened," said Kamhar Lakumani, Deputy of the Election Winning Body of the Democratic Party. Despite the opportunity to advance their own candidate for president, Kamhar emphasized that the Democratic Party remains committed to supporting President Prabowo Subianto. He asserted that the Democratic Party will exert all efforts to ensure the success of President Prabowo's administration.

National Mandate Party

Saleh Partaonan Daulay, Deputy Chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN), stated that PAN has been advocating for the removal of the presidential threshold, viewing it as unjust. He noted that many constitutional rights of citizens have been overlooked and curtailed by the existence of the presidential threshold.
