Ahmad Doli Kurnia, the head of the Golkar Party, emphasized the importance of respecting the Constitutional Court's (MK) ruling that abolished the presidential threshold of a minimum of 20% of seats in the House of Representatives as a requirement for presidential and vice-presidential nominations. He also noted the necessity for the government and the House of Representatives to follow up on this decision within a broader political context. "As citizens of a rule of law, we must respect and accept the MK's ruling, as it is final and binding within our legal system. Whether we like it or not, this decision must be implemented. However, I encourage everyone to interpret this ruling in a broader perspective," Doli stated in his remarks on Sunday, January 5, 2025. The Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Body (Baleg) of the House of Representatives observed that the timing of the MK's decision coincides with the rising discourse on improving the political and democratic systems in Indonesia. He referenced President Prabowo Subianto's comments during the Golkar Party's anniversary celebration, which addressed the electoral system through local councils. "Following President Prabowo's statement at the 60th anniversary of the Golkar Party, the push for immediate reforms in the electoral system, including local elections, has gained momentum. The MK's Decision No. 63/PUU-XXII/2024, like previous rulings regarding electoral system challenges, consistently concludes with directives for lawmakers to follow up with legislative revisions. This latest ruling is even more explicit, indicating that it should be accompanied by constitutional engineering efforts," Doli remarked. He argued that the MK's ruling is not a final solution to the issues within the electoral system, highlighting that the presidential threshold requirement for candidacy is interconnected with other electoral criteria.
