The Inauguration Of Regional Heads Has Been Postponed To March 2025 And Will Be Regulated Through A Presidential Decree

Monday, 06 Jan 2025

The inauguration of elected regional heads from the 2024 Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) has been postponed from February 2025 to March 2025. This delay was confirmed by the Chairman of Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Rifqinizamy Karsayuda. He stated that the postponement is due to the Constitutional Court (MK) being expected to resolve all disputes regarding the Election Result Disputes (PHPU) from the 2024 Pilkada by March 13, 2025. "The MK will only issue letters confirming that there are no disputes to all elected governors and mayors after the PHPU is concluded at the MK," Rifqinizamy was quoted as saying by Antaranews on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

Consequently, Rifqinizamy noted that elected regional heads without disputes at the MK must still wait for the conclusion of hearings regarding disputes in other regions. Therefore, the inauguration will take place simultaneously. "This is the fundamental principle of simultaneous Pilkada. Thus, those without disputes must wait for the resolution of those with disputes at the MK," he explained. However, Rifqinizamy revealed that the decision to postpone the inauguration schedule will be made by the President through the issuance of a new Presidential Regulation. As a result, he could not confirm the exact date of the regional heads' inauguration in March 2025. "It will take the form of a Presidential Regulation, not a KPU Regulation. Therefore, it is at the Presidential level," said Rifqinizamy.

As is known, according to Presidential Regulation Number 80 of 2024 regarding the procedures for the inauguration of regional heads, the inauguration of elected governors and deputy governors from the 2024 Pilkada was initially scheduled for February 7, 2025. Meanwhile, the inauguration of elected regents and deputy regents, as well as mayors and deputy mayors from the 2024 Simultaneous Pilkada, was scheduled for February 10, 2025.

The MK is set to commence its first hearing with a preliminary examination agenda for the disputes concerning the election results of governors, regents, and mayors, or the Pilkada 2024 disputes, on January 8, 2025.
