The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has established a dedicated division responsible for overseeing the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies. This division operates under the coordination of Aju Widyasari, who serves as the Director of Artificial Intelligence and New Technology Ecosystems. It is part of the Digital Ecosystem Directorate of Komdigi, which is led by Edwin Hidayat as the Director General. The establishment of this division was highlighted by Bonifasius Wahyu Pudjianto, the Head of the Human Resource Development Agency (BPSDM) of Komdigi, during the launch of the Laskar AI program in Jakarta on Thursday, February 13. Boni explained that the formation of the Digital Ecosystem Directorate is a component of the ministry's transformation from its previous designation as the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo). The primary responsibilities of the Directorate of AI and New Technology include facilitating the integration of technology into strategic sectors and promoting the adoption of new technologies, particularly AI. Boni stated, "Their role is to facilitate the integration of technology into strategic sectors, with a primary focus on the adoption of new technologies, especially AI as a key tool." Additionally, the development of policies related to AI is a significant focus area. To achieve this, the directorate will employ a sandbox approach for policy analysis, which is expected to lead to substantial breakthroughs in AI regulation in Indonesia. Currently, Indonesia lacks specific regulations governing AI, with the only available reference being the Minister of Communication and Information Circular No. 9 of 2023 regarding AI Ethics, which serves merely as a recommendation. However, Komdigi has initiated discussions with various stakeholders to formulate more robust AI policies. The Deputy Minister of Komdigi, Nezar Patria, indicated that these discussions will continue until early March.
