BRIN Promotes Digital Independence Through Innovative Smart Card Technology

Tuesday, 31 Dec 2024

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is actively enhancing its contribution to national technological independence by developing smart card technology services and testing capabilities.

This technology is anticipated to bolster Indonesia's sustainable digital ecosystem through various innovative applications, ranging from transportation and payment systems to population identification.

Dwidharma Priyasta Tasurun, a Senior Engineer at the BRIN Electronics Research Center, stated that smart cards represent a modern solution for chip-based data storage and processing. "The smart card technology we are developing includes various types, such as contact, contactless, hybrid, and dual interface cards, all designed in accordance with international ISO/IEC standards and national regulations," he explained during the SISTEM (Scientific Sharing of Science and Technology in Electronics and Its Benefits) webinar on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

These smart cards have been implemented across multiple sectors in Indonesia, including transportation, telecommunications, and electronic payments. With its specialized laboratory, BRIN is equipped to conduct testing on various types of smart cards, ranging from durability tests to compatibility assessments of electronic ID card chips. "Our laboratory is capable of comprehensive testing, including contactless card tests, card reader evaluations, bending and twisting tests, as well as electrostatic discharge tests," Dwidharma added.

BRIN recognizes the significant potential of smart card technology in supporting national digital transformation. Dwidharma expressed hope that these services can continue to evolve to meet future technological challenges. "By leveraging our existing laboratory facilities, we are confident in our ability to strengthen national technological independence while simultaneously fostering a sustainable digital ecosystem," he concluded.
