The agricultural sector in Indonesia, which has long been a key pillar of food security and the country's economy, is now facing urgent challenges. Data from the Parliamentary Analysis Center of the Indonesian House of Representatives shows a significant decline in the number of farmers. Over the past decade, the number of farmers dropped from 31.70 million in 2013 to 29.34 million in 2023, marking a decrease of 7.42%. This decline is particularly evident among younger farmers, with those aged 25–34 decreasing by 1.73% and those aged 35–44 declining by 4.34%. If swift action is not taken to empower the younger generation in agriculture, Indonesia may face a crisis of young farmers, threatening the future of the nation's food security. In response to this challenge, PT Sharp Electronics Indonesia, a corporation committed to environmental preservation and community welfare, has launched a new initiative called Sharp Hydro Heroes. “This program aims to spark interest among young people in agriculture while contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” said Shinji Teraoka, President Director of PT Sharp Electronics Indonesia. Focusing on goals such as No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Reduced Inequalities, Sharp Hydro Heroes not only seeks to increase the number of young farmers but also aims to create a better future for communities and the environment. This initiative represents corporate support for strengthening sustainable agriculture and ensuring food security in Indonesia. Sharp Hydro Heroes aims to be a new hope for the younger generation by offering them a chance to engage in modern agriculture. Launched on November 5, 2024, in Pinayungan Village, East Teluk Jambe, Karawang Barat, the program selected 20 young individuals from the local community surrounding Sharp Indonesia through a series of tests. Covering an area of 20 x 15 meters, the chosen participants will receive structured training that includes the basics of farming, hydroponic techniques, and digital marketing. In today's fast-paced world, the ability to market agricultural products through social media is crucial. Supported by Benihbaik.com, a social platform focused on sustainability, this initiative gains strength by providing access to resources and a broader network. Participants will not only learn how to cultivate crops but will also be guided by experts to apply entrepreneurial knowledge. The goal of this training is to develop young individuals who can advance sustainable agriculture, create decent job opportunities, and contribute to inclusive economic growth. Shinji Teraoka, President Director of PT Sharp Electronics Indonesia, stated, "Sharp Hydro Heroes is our concrete step to support the youth and encourage their active role in agriculture." The Acting Regent of Karawang, Teppy Wawan Dharmawan, welcomed this initiative, emphasizing its importance in enhancing agricultural skills among the youth, saying, “We hope this program can inspire more young farmers in Karawang.” With a spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation, Sharp Hydro Heroes is committed to creating a sustainable agricultural future. This initiative focuses not only on improving individual skills but also on strengthening Indonesia's food security, ensuring that future generations are prepared to face existing challenges.
