Starting In 2025, A Complimentary "Medical Check Up" Will Cover 75 Different Diseases

The Ministry of Health has introduced a complimentary health screening initiative, or medical check-up, for various illnesses available to citizens at community health centers (puskesmas). Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin announced that this free health screening will be offered to every citizen on their birthday starting in 2025.

"This screening serves as a birthday present from the government to the public, taking place annually to promote early health monitoring," Budi stated in an official announcement on Thursday, October 31, 2024. The Ministry has already rolled out a free medical check-up program at puskesmas under the National Health Insurance (JKN) since 2023, although this program currently covers screenings for only 14 diseases.

What diseases can be screened for free at puskesmas?

Beginning in 2025, the free medical check-up will include screenings for 75 diseases. This initiative is designed to improve early detection and reduce the risks of mortality and disability. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, Director of Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Control (P2PTM) at the Ministry of Health, noted that the free health screening program on birthdays will extend beyond puskesmas.

"Yes, there is a health screening service program. Initially, it will take place at puskesmas and Posyandu, with plans to expand to other healthcare facilities later on," Nadia confirmed to Kompas.com on Monday, November 4, 2024. The free health screening will be organized into four age-based categories.

Screening will be available for children aged 0-4 years, concentrating on identifying congenital diseases. The following details will outline the health conditions that will be assessed:

1. Hiotiroid kongenital

2. Penyakit jantung bawaan kritis

3. Hiperplasia adrenal kongenital

4. Defisiensi G6PD

5. Pertumbuhan

6. Perkembangan

7. Indera pendengaran

8. Indera penglihatan

9. Gigi dan mulut

10. Talasemia

11. Hepar.

Free medical check-up for teenagers

Health screenings for children and teenagers between the ages of 7 and 17 focus mainly on detecting prevalent health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and dental problems.  The details are as follows:

5. Anemia

6. Obesitas

7. Diabetes melitus

Free medical check-up for adults  

Health screenings for adults aim to identify cancer early, particularly breast and cervical cancers, which are major contributors to female mortality, along with prostate cancer, a significant cause of death for men in Indonesia.  

The diseases and health conditions examined in adults are categorized into two age groups. The details are as follows.

18-39 years old:

Free medical check-up for the elderly: 

Conducting health screenings for individuals aged 60 and above, with an emphasis on assessing for Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis, and overall health concerns associated with aging. Here are the details:

Screenings will take place at local health centers and schools, following the appropriate age groups. The Ministry of Health will work together with the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration to gather information on residents who are celebrating their birthdays.

Nadia also mentioned that residents with upcoming birthdays who want to take part in the complimentary health screening in 2025 just need to go to their nearest community health center with their ID. The staff at the health center will check the residents' information against the population database, allowing them to access the free health screening services.
