Pelindo Has Launched A Series Of Books Titled KapitaSelekta, Focusing On The Development Of Indonesia's First Port

PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero), or Pelindo, recently launched the "Kapita Selekta" book series focused on port development in Indonesia during the Pelindo Stakeholder Gathering & Book Launch at Royale Jakarta Golf Club on Saturday, October 12, 2024. This book is the first of its kind in Indonesia, examining port management from three key angles: policy development, sustainable management, and technical aspects of port development.

The "Kapita Selekta" series is a collaborative effort between Pelindo and the Transportation and Logistics Study Center (Pustral) at Gadjah Mada University (UGM). It includes three editions: Book 1 covers Policy Perspectives on Port Development in Indonesia, Book 2 focuses on Sustainable Port Management, and Book 3 delves into the Technical Aspects of Port Development.

Ihsanuddin Usman, the Director of Human Resources and General Affairs at Pelindo, highlighted that this book is the result of hard work from 58 authors from various institutions both in Indonesia and abroad, reviewed by independent reviewers from different partners and associations, and edited by three professors: Prof. Dr-tech. Ir. Danang Parikesit, MSc.(Eng), IPU, APEC.Eng., Prof. Raja Oloan Saut Gurning, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D, and Prof. Sari Wahyuni, S.I.P., M.Sc., Ph.D.

"We've been discussing with academics how the conversation around port development shouldn't just be limited to Pelindo and its strategic partners, but should also engage the younger generation. This way, port development can become a strong foundation for Indonesia as an archipelagic nation," said Ihsanuddin during his opening speech at the book launch.

To create an integrated maritime ecosystem, ports can't operate in isolation; they need to collaborate with all stakeholders and regulators within the maritime ecosystem.

Pelindo and Pustral UGM teamed up with stakeholders, regulators, customers, and academics in the port, maritime, and logistics sectors to share knowledge on best practices in port management and the creation of this book.

In the first edition, the book dives deep into policies and perspectives, covering economic, legal, and regulatory aspects, as well as understanding performance measurement indices for ports and logistics. The second edition takes a closer look at sustainable port management issues, business sustainability through strategic alliances at Indonesian port terminals, forecasting port usage needs, and comparing with the world’s top ports, especially regarding port sustainability.

The technical aspects in the third edition outline the challenges of modernizing port terminal planning and design, risk mitigation strategies during port construction, and the impact of technological disruptions and digital transformation on port operations.

"We hope this book serves as a catalyst for decision-makers in government and corporations, as well as private partners, to revisit and reassess the implementation of best practices. There are public service aspects to consider, but we also need to maintain commercial interests. Our industry is poised for continuous growth, with rising investments, and we must ensure that public oversight remains strong," said Danang Parikesit, Professor of Engineering Economics & Transportation Policy at UGM.
