Trump Cuts Indonesian Import Tariffs To 19%!

Friday, 18 Jul 2025

President Donald Trump said the United States (US) had reached a trade deal with Indonesia after speaking with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. Trump made this statement on Tuesday (July 15, 2025).

Citing CNN Business, Wednesday (July 16, 2025), hours after announcing the agreement on Truth Social, Trump said the terms of the agreement were that Indonesia would not impose any tariffs on US exports, while the US would impose a 19% tariff on Indonesian exports, down from the previous 32%.

In a subsequent post on Truth Social, Trump said the deal had been "finalized." However, the Indonesian government had not made a similar announcement as of Tuesday afternoon.

Trump also said Indonesia was committed to purchasing $15 billion worth of US energy, $4.5 billion worth of American agricultural products, and 50 Boeing aircraft, many of which would be Boeing 777s.

Before leaving the White House to speak at a summit in Pittsburgh, Trump said Indonesia was known for its high-quality copper, which the US would use.

This could mean that copper from Indonesia could be subject to lower tariffs, or even no tariffs at all.

Although Indonesia exported US$20 million worth of copper to the US last year, according to US Department of Commerce data, that figure is still below that of major suppliers, Chile and Canada, which shipped US$6 billion and US$4 billion worth of the metal to the US last year.
