In July, PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) reaffirmed its commitment to environmental conservation by planting 10 thousand mangroves to commemorate World Mangrove Ecosystem Conservation Day. This initiative involves planting tens of thousands of mangroves along the coast of Indonesia since 2023. Through the "BerSEAnergi untuk Laut" program, PIS is dedicated to reducing global carbon emissions by regularly planting mangrove trees across its operational areas and subsidiaries under SH IML. As we know, mangroves play a crucial role in environmental sustainability. Besides protecting the coastlines and storing carbon, mangroves also provide an ecosystem for marine life and support the well-being of coastal communities. During a recent visit to the Tanjung Uban Terminal, PIS's Finance Director Diah Kurniawati planted over 3,000 mangrove trees. "This planting has the potential to absorb 201 tons of CO2e over the next 20 years. We hope this activity will have a positive impact on coastal communities by enhancing biodiversity and climate resilience," said Diah. PIS's Corporate Secretary, Muh. Aryomekka Firdaus, added that based on internal calculations, each mangrove tree is estimated to absorb up to 3.35 kg of CO2 per year. The mangrove forests formed can enhance biodiversity in coastal areas, supporting the sustainable income of local communities. The "BerSEAnergi untuk Laut" program is a Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (CSER) initiative of PIS aimed at protecting the sea and helping build sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities. This program aims to enhance green business & sustainability aspects, in line with PIS's Work Plan and Budget for 2024. Aryo further mentioned that the inception of this program aligns with SDGs No. 13 Climate Action and No. 14 Life Below Water. The ocean theme was chosen considering the company's operational areas located at sea. The "BerSEAnergi untuk Laut" initiative just won the "Gold" ESG Communication award from the Indonesian PR institution, for the community relations category. PIS received this award last week. In line with Pertamina Group and the government's decarbonization agenda, PIS continues to innovate and commit to environmental preservation through various TJSL programs. By planting more than 10 thousand mangrove trees, PIS hopes to make a real contribution in protecting coastal communities by enhancing the biodiversity and climate resilience of the area," Aryo concluded.
