United States (US) President Donald Trump has imposed a 32 percent import tariff on Indonesia. The Head of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), Hasan Nasbi, stated that a government team has departed for Washington, D.C., to continue negotiations regarding the tariffs. "Our negotiating team is already in DC. This morning, our negotiating team, which will continue the discussions, is in DC, and the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs is en route from Rio de Janeiro to DC. I contacted him earlier, and he is on his way from Rio to DC," Hasan told reporters at his office in the Kwarnas Pramuka building in Gambir, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (July 8, 2025). Hasan said there is still time to negotiate, as Trump's tariffs are set to take effect on August 1, 2025. He is optimistic that the government's negotiations will be successful due to Indonesia's good relations with all countries, including the United States. "And what we can rely on is this date; it's been extended to August 1st. This means we have several weeks to negotiate. And our nation, our government, is very optimistic about the negotiations," he said. "Because we also know we have good relations with all countries. Including the United States, we've had very good relations. And of course, that good relationship can be good social capital for continuing discussions and negotiations there," he continued. Hasan asked the public to wait for news from Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto. He hoped there would be good news from the negotiations. "Now, for a complete explanation, please be patient, friends. We'll wait for the Coordinating Minister for the Economy to arrive in DC and provide an update to all of us," he said. For your information, Trump's tariff policy will officially take effect on August 1, 2025. Trump has sent letters to several world leaders, including Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. In his letter, Trump wrote about the strong trade cooperation between Indonesia and the US, but he regretted that this cooperation has resulted in a US trade deficit with Indonesia. For the sake of fair trade and reducing the US deficit with Indonesia, Trump will impose a reciprocal tariff on Indonesia of 32 percent. "Starting August 1, 2025, we will impose a 32 percent tariff on Indonesia on all Indonesian products shipped to the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs. Goods reshipped to avoid the higher Tariff will be subject to the higher Tariff. Please understand that the 32 percent figure is far less than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit gap we have with your country," he explained in a letter uploaded to Truth Social.
