Trump Officially Sends Import Tariff Letter, Is Indonesia Among The Countries Affected?

Wednesday, 09 Jul 2025

United States (US) President Donald Trump revealed that he has signed a letter containing details of new tariffs on exports from 12 US trading partner countries.

In the letter, Trump gave two options to the countries: "take it or leave it."

He made the statement to reporters while on board the presidential plane Air Force One on his way to New Jersey, as reported by Reuters, Sunday (6/7).

However, Trump refused to reveal the names of the countries that received the letter.

"I have signed several letters and the letters will be sent on Monday (7/7), probably to 12 countries. The number of tariffs and the value varies," said Trump.

Trump said that so far a new trade agreement has been reached with the UK. In the agreement, import tariffs are maintained at 10%, with several sectors such as automotive and aircraft engines receiving preferential treatment.

Meanwhile, Vietnam has succeeded in reducing tariffs from 46% to 20%, and Cambodia is said to be close to completing a trade agreement with the US.

Countries such as Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, and the European Union are still in the negotiation stage. In contrast, the chances of an agreement with India have reportedly failed to materialize.

Trump had previously announced plans to send out new tariff notices starting Friday, July 5, 2025.

The tariffs will range from 10% to 70%, and are scheduled to take effect on August 1, 2025.

This policy is part of Trump's strategy to pressure partner countries to agree to bilateral trade agreements before the July 9, 2025 deadline, following the end of trade negotiations with the US.

"On July 9, everything will be in effect. The values ??will range from 60% or 70% tariffs, to 10% and 20%," Trump said.
