PT SMI, Through Its TJSL Program, Helps Make West Java Greener To Reduce Carbon Emissions

Tuesday, 11 Feb 2025

PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (Persero) (PT SMI) is actively supporting the government's efforts to address climate change. Through its Social and Environmental Responsibility program, the company is planting terrestrial plants in critical areas in West Java Province. This initiative collaborates with the West Java Forestry Office and the Ecovillage Network to plant trees in three regions: Bandung, Bogor, and Cianjur. The total area for this program is 30 hectares, utilizing village land, private land, and social forestry areas under the coordination of the West Java Forestry Branch Office.

The program was officially launched at a ceremony held at one of the planting sites in Sukakarya Village, Cisarua District, Bogor Regency, on Monday, February 10, 2025. The event was attended by PT SMI's President Director, Reynaldi Hermansjah, the Head of the West Java Forestry Office, Dodit Ardian Pancapana, local officials, and farmers from the area. During the ceremony, PT SMI symbolically handed over tree seedlings to the West Java Forestry Office and conducted a joint symbolic planting with all present stakeholders.

This greening program is part of PT SMI's efforts to offset carbon emissions generated by its business operations. "Today, we witness our concrete actions to help reduce carbon emissions. If the media remembers, during PT SMI's anniversary last year, in front of the Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, we reaffirmed our commitment to sustainability by declaring our goal to become a carbon-neutral company by 2028."

This step is part of our roadmap to become a carbon-neutral company and support the government's goal of reaching net-zero carbon by 2060 or sooner. We hope to expand collaborations like this with various parties to tackle the climate crisis together, said Reynaldi Hermansjah, CEO of PT SMI.

Dodit Ardian Pancapana, Head of the West Java Forestry Office, praised PT SMI's initiative in organizing the greening program. "On behalf of the West Java Provincial Government, I thank PT SMI for designing and implementing this greening program. It aligns with our main focus to rehabilitate priority lands in several areas. This program will also empower local communities, improving their welfare," Dodit stated.

Local communities and farmer groups are involved to understand and actively participate in reducing carbon emissions through tree planting, while also gaining economic benefits from the trees planted. A total of 27,000 tree seedlings will be planted using an agroforestry approach. The types of trees include damar, calamondin orange, avocado, suren, clove, and coffee.

The critical land planting program in West Java is projected to absorb 308.28 tons of CO2 per year, totaling 1,849.68 tons of CO2 by 2028. PT SMI will calculate the actual carbon absorption from this greening program by appointing a consultant after the greening activities are completed.

In addition to this critical land planting, PT SMI is also actively contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) through a series of corporate social responsibility programs.
