The Indonesian Minister Of Environment And Forestry Met With A Senior Advisor To The US President To Discuss The Indonesia-US Collaboration On Climate Ambitions

Thursday, 27 Jun 2024

Minister Siti arrived in Oslo, Norway on Monday (24/6) evening local time. She immediately held a bilateral meeting with SPEC John Podesta, the Senior Advisor to the President of the United States for International Climate Policy. Minister Siti expressed Indonesia's commitment to strengthen the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets within the framework of the Paris Agreement, aiming to keep global temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius and further reduce it to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

"Increasing our greenhouse gas emission reduction targets to 31.89% unconditionally and 43.20% conditionally is a step towards achieving the Second NDC (SNDC) goals for emission reduction from 2031 to 2035," Minister Siti stated.

Furthermore, Minister Siti explained that Indonesia's climate ambition in the SNDC design will include mitigation actions in agriculture and livestock sectors to reduce methane gas emissions. John Podesta emphasized the importance of Indonesia's role and cooperation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across various sectors, particularly in energy through energy transition including biomass energy, as well as in forestry and land use.

Podesta emphasized the importance of strategies to achieve NDC commitments by 2035 with an integrated plan. He also expressed concerns and hopes for immediate investment realization through the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) scheme with a projection of $20 billion to support the energy sector transition.

The implementation of JETP with a funding value of $20 billion or equivalent to 300 trillion rupiahs from public and private investments in the form of grants and low-interest loans is expected to accelerate the decarbonization of the electricity sector with blue carbon targets and industrial sectors to reduce HFC consumption.

Furthermore, Minister Siti stated that Indonesia has studied and shared experiences with the United States Forest Service in strengthening capacity to support the implementation of the Folu Net Sink 2030 strategy. Indonesia also collaborates with the United States Environmental Protection Agency to develop action plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially methane, from the waste sector.

RI-US Agree on Methane Gas Emission Handling Actions

In that bilateral meeting, Indonesia and the United States have agreed on several matters that require follow-up, including action plans to address methane gas emissions in the waste sector through methane capture development. Priority locations are directed towards 35 landfill sites that have experienced fires as a result of the extraordinary summer in 2023.

Additionally, the United States offers cooperation in developing methods and standards for seagrass inventory through support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Within the framework of Working Group 2 Task Force (Natural Capital and Ecosystem Services: FOLU, Mangroves, and Ocean), discussions will be held, as well as plans for organizing a Workshop on the Carbon Market in August 2024.
