Covestro And Alibaba Cloud Collaborate On Innovative Sustainable Plastic Traceability

Measuring the utilization of sustainable materials and related carbon footprint data along the supply chain is becoming increasingly important, due to rising consumer expectations and regulatory requirements. Therefore, in addition to close collaboration throughout the value chain, the availability of tracking tools is also crucial to achieve goals to the fullest.

Covestro, a material producer, addresses this need through a partnership with Alibaba Cloud, the backbone of digital technology and intelligence from the Alibaba Group. Together, Covestro and Alibaba Cloud will provide essential solutions and tools for downstream industries starting from Asia, to enhance transparency in the supply chain through calculations and tracing of sustainable carbon materials.

In this partnership, Covestro plays a crucial role as a provider of more sustainable plastic solutions, along with its carbon footprint data. On the other hand, Alibaba Cloud Energy Expert, a sustainability platform powered by AI, plays a role in realizing emission calculations throughout the life cycle of recycled materials to end products for consumers by utilizing digital technologies like blockchain.

This platform also offers end-to-end solutions for industrial companies to measure and optimize their carbon footprint throughout the production cycle.

The joint solutions from the collaboration between Covestro and Alibaba Group have been implemented in the consumer product sector. For example, Covestro worked with a leading beverage manufacturer in China, Nongfu Spring, to recycle 19-liter water barrels into post-consumer recycled polycarbonate.

These materials are then used by KACO, a specialty stationery brand in China, to produce pens. Through carbon emission calculators and digital tools from Alibaba Cloud Energy Expert, consumers can scan the QR code on the pen packaging to trace the origin of materials, view detailed carbon footprint at each stage in the production chain, and the amount of carbon emissions saved compared to the original materials.
