President Prabowo Subianto welcomed the visit of José Manuel Barroso, Chair of the GAVI (Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization) Board, and Dr. Shania Nishtar, CEO of GAVI, at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Friday, December 6, 2024. During the meeting, President Prabowo expressed his gratitude for GAVI's significant contributions to Indonesia, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. "GAVI has supported Indonesia up to this day, especially during the COVID pandemic, providing 110.3 million doses of vaccines valued at USD 684.6 million, along with cold chain equipment and other financial assistance totaling nearly USD 1 billion," President Prabowo stated in a press release following the meeting. The President also highlighted GAVI's emphasis on the importance of preparedness for future pandemic threats. It is noteworthy that the Mpox outbreak is currently ongoing in Africa. "He also warned us not to be complacent, as the possibility of a pandemic can arise at any time. There is still an outbreak known as Mpox in Africa. We must remain vigilant," President Prabowo remarked. In recognition of GAVI's substantial support, President Prabowo announced that Indonesia would join the global alliance and contribute a donation of USD 30 million. "Now that we have recovered, we feel the desire to assist GAVI in its future endeavors, and we are prepared to contribute USD 30 million," President Prabowo stated. Meanwhile, GAVI Chair José Manuel Barroso expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and respect shown by President Prabowo. Barroso also commended Indonesia's contributions to global health. "We admire Indonesia's role, particularly in the region, as it can serve as a platform for global health, including immunization programs and vaccine manufacturing that is exported to various countries," Barroso said.
