Pertamina International Shipping Plants 10,000 Mangroves To Protect Indonesia's Coastline

Wednesday, 04 Dec 2024

PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has made a significant commitment to support ocean sustainability and protect Indonesia's coastal areas. Over the past year, PIS has successfully planted 10,000 mangrove trees through its Social and Environmental Responsibility program, BerSEAnergi for the Sea.

The highlight of this initiative was the planting of 1,000 mangrove trees in the Tanjung Pasir Mangrove Area in Tangerang, Banten. This event marked the completion of the goal to plant 10,000 mangroves along Indonesia's coast. The program started in 2023 and reflects PIS's dedication to reducing carbon emissions across its operational areas.

"This aligns with PIS and Pertamina's long-term plan to significantly cut carbon emissions by 2050. This activity also symbolizes the commitment of Pertamina Group employees to support the livelihoods of coastal communities in Indonesia, especially in Tangerang," said PIS Corporate Secretary Muhammad Baron.

In addition to planting mangroves, the program includes educational efforts on the importance of preserving coastal ecosystems. These activities aim to create a positive impact on environmental sustainability and enhance the well-being of coastal communities.

"This is in line with the Asta Cita values, which promote a harmonious relationship with the environment and nature, aiming for a just and prosperous society," added Muhammad Baron.

For this initiative, PIS collaborated with the Pertamina Christian Community Coordination Agency (Bakor Umkris) as part of the Christmas event and with Seasoldier, a nonprofit organization focused on marine ecosystem preservation in Indonesia's coastal areas. This activity invites volunteers to help protect coastal ecosystems and raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.

The "BerSEAnergi untuk Laut" program, initiated by PIS, includes activities like LiteraSea, empowering coastal communities, coastal clean-ups, and conserving marine life and ecosystems such as mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass, and whale sharks. This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly goal 14, which focuses on preserving marine ecosystems.
