To Enhance Downstream Processing, Indonesia Is Exploring Collaboration With Saudi Arabia

Monday, 21 Apr 2025

In response to the uncertainties of the global economy and the tariff policies of U.S. President Donald Trump, Indonesia is intensifying its collaboration with several countries. Currently, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia are exploring partnerships in the petrochemical sector and the development of industrial zones.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, along with Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry Eko SA Cahyanto and their team, welcomed a delegation from the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, led by Bandar Al-Khorayef, at the Office of the Human Resource Development Agency for Industry (BPSDMI) in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

Agus remarked that the visit of the Saudi Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources to Indonesia is timely, given the recent developments in geo-economics and geopolitics. Both Indonesia and Saudi Arabia recognize that the current global uncertainty requires collective attention.

In light of this global uncertainty, it is essential to implement mitigation strategies against policies that may be introduced by the United States. "Therefore, to address this global uncertainty, we agree that strengthening cooperation between our two nations is one effective approach," Agus stated.

During discussions with the Saudi delegation, Indonesia expressed its desire to collaborate in the petrochemical sector. This partnership is deemed crucial as Indonesia seeks to enhance its industrial downstream processes and support related sectors.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is in the process of developing industrial zones, and Indonesia can serve as a model for industrial development in the Kingdom.

"All of this will soon be formalized in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. We hope to implement this MoU as soon as possible," Agus concluded.
