Halal Certification Accelerated, Economic Impact Predicted To Expand

Wednesday, 26 Mar 2025

Efforts to accelerate halal certification for micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) products have begun to be intensified. This step was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Jakarta Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and the Halal Product Guarantee Agency (BPJPH), which is projected to have a significant economic impact. The Chairperson of the Jakarta Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Diana Dewi, emphasized that halal certification not only guarantees the halalness of products, but also opens up new economic opportunities. For the initial stage, 1,000 MSME products will receive halal certification, before being increased to 1.5 million halal certificates in 2025. "Kadin DKI and Kadins in all provinces will facilitate all MSME products to be certified. Certified products are not limited to food/drinks but also include fashion, cosmetics, and others that will be facilitated by Kadin Indonesia," he said at an event held at the BPJPH Head Office, quoted on Saturday, March 22, 2025.

Opportunities for New Workers and Increased Competitiveness

The acceleration of halal certification is predicted to create a domino effect on the economic sector, especially with the increasing need for halal assistants. "Halal certification requires a long series of processes. Therefore, Kadin DKI feels the need to collaborate with BPJPH so that certification can be carried out massively and in a structured manner," explained Diana Dewi. Halal certification is also seen as a strategic step to increase the competitiveness of MSMEs in the global market. With clear halal standards, local products will find it easier to penetrate export markets, especially in countries with Muslim majorities. Although the certification process requires costs, Diana Dewi ensures that there will be no increase in product prices due to the burden of certification. "As a country with a Muslim majority population, halal certification is very much needed so that the public is assured that a particular product is indeed fit for consumption," she added.

Cosmetic, Fashion, and Drug Certification Starting in 2026

BPJPH Chairman, Haikal Hasan, added that halal certification for the cosmetics, fashion, and drug categories will only be implemented in October 2026. However, the DKI Chamber of Commerce and Industry decided to first accelerate the certification of other product categories as a form of initial socialization.

"The DKI Chamber of Commerce and Industry is moving earlier and one step ahead in certifying various products so that prospective consumers are sure that the products they buy are truly halal for consumption," said Haikal Hasan.

Support for this program also came from the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Anindya Bakrie, who was also present at the event. With this collaboration, the acceleration of halal certification is expected to provide broad benefits for MSMEs, create new jobs, and strengthen Indonesia's position as a global halal industry center.
