Shell Denies Rumors Of Closing All Gas Stations In Indonesia

Monday, 25 Nov 2024

PT Shell Indonesia has denied rumors regarding the closure of all its gas stations (SPBU) in the country. "Shell Indonesia would like to clarify that the circulating information about plans to shut down all SPBUs in Indonesia is false," stated Susi Hutapea, Vice President of Corporate Relations for Shell Indonesia, in Jakarta on Sunday, November 24, as reported by Antara.

Susi emphasized that Shell remains focused on its gas station operations. However, the company refrained from providing further comments on the market speculation. "We cannot comment on the speculation occurring in the market. Shell Indonesia continues to concentrate on the operations of SPBUs for our customers," she explained.

The National Oil and Gas Companies Association (Aspermigas) had previously heard rumors about Shell Indonesia's potential closure of all its gas stations. Moshe Rizal, Chairman of the Investment Committee at Aspermigas, acknowledged that he had been aware of such rumors for several weeks. "If you ask whether I have heard about it, yes, I have heard that news (about Shell closing). This has been circulating for a few weeks. This is my estimation, but indeed, the fuel business, especially fuel distribution and gas stations, is challenging. Why? In Indonesia, it is largely monopolized by Pertamina," Moshe stated, as quoted by detikcom.

In its Energy Transition Strategy 2024 report, Shell announced plans to close 1,000 gas stations by 2025 as part of its efforts to support energy transition. "We plan to divest approximately 500 Shell-owned locations, including joint ventures, each year in 2024 and 2025," Shell noted in a report released in March. According to information on Shell's official website, the global energy and petrochemical company operates around 47,000 gas stations worldwide and employs 103,000 people across more than 70 countries.
