Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, the Minister of Environment or Head of the Environmental Control Agency, has mandated that all producers in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector, retail, and the food and beverage service industry promptly develop a roadmap for waste reduction that encompasses products, packaging, and containers. This requirement is based on the Ministerial Regulation of the Environment and Forestry (LHK) Number P.75 of 2019 concerning the Roadmap for Waste Reduction by Producers. Hanif highlighted that Indonesia is currently facing significant challenges in waste management. According to data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), the total waste generated across 368 districts and cities reached 38.4 million tons in 2023, with an estimated total of 50 million tons if all 514 districts and cities report their data. Of this total, 23.7 million tons, or 61.6 percent, is managed at final processing sites (TPA), while 14.8 million tons, or 38.4 percent, remains unprocessed. "Of the total, waste managed through source reduction and handling at final processing sites amounts to 23.7 million tons, while 14.8 million tons is still unprocessed," stated Hanif following his return from the COP29 event in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Friday, November 15, 2024. In light of this, the Director General of Forestry Planning and Environmental Governance (PTKL) at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry emphasized the necessity of shifting from the linear model of 'Collect-Transport-Dispose,' which is still widely practiced, to a circular model through reuse and recycling practices.
