The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has reported that several business operators are beginning to show interest in establishing fish protein hydrolysate (HPI) processing plants. Budi Sulistyo, the Director General of Strengthening Competitiveness of Marine and Fisheries Products (PDSPKP) at KKP, noted that many fish processing entrepreneurs have inquired about the requirements for setting up HPI facilities. "Business operators are increasingly interested; many have approached us to ask about the necessary requirements and the applicable standards," Budi stated in Jakarta on Friday. He indicated that at least five domestic entrepreneurs are keen on establishing fish protein processing plants. However, there has yet to be any follow-up on this interest. Furthermore, Budi stated that the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) acts as a standard provider for the technology and raw materials required. "Many have consulted with us. We hope that in the near future, there will be expressions of serious interest, particularly in the northern coastal areas," Budi remarked. Fish milk is a protein beverage, one of the derivative products of Fish Protein Hydrolysate (HPI), which is processed and presented similarly to milk. The term "fish milk" serves as a branding strategy for the innovative derivative product of HPI, making it easier for the public to recognize and consume. HPI is an extract of fish protein resulting from research conducted by the biotechnology team of KKP in 2017, utilizing economically low-value fish such as petek, selar, tamban, and belok. This industry is poised to play a crucial role in enhancing the welfare of fishermen. HPI represents an effort to increase the daily protein intake of the population, which currently stands at 62.3 grams per capita per day, still below the average in ASEAN countries and significantly lower than in developed nations, where it exceeds 100 grams per capita per day. The main raw material for fish milk, known as HPI, possesses multifunctional and practical characteristics, which can stimulate the creation of innovative local food products through the fortification of food and beverages. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has also demonstrated the use of HPI in various snacks, including cookies, cilok, cream puffs, gambang bread, and a variety of traditional desserts, all of which are high in protein. An HPI processing plant has been established in Indramayu, with a capacity of 30 tons per month of fish milk. This facility has been operational since 2021. Simultaneously, KKP will closely coordinate with the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) to promote replication in various coastal regions of Indonesia as part of a fisheries downstream program and efforts to reduce stunting rates.
